Lung Cancer FAQ’s
What are the causes of lung cancer?
The primary cause of lung cancer is smoking. Those exposed to secondhand smoke for a prolonged period of time are also at risk for lung cancer. The risk of lung cancer increases with the length of time and number of cigarettes smoked and the amount of time one has been exposed to secondhand smoke. Other causes of lung cancer include exposure to raydon, air pollution, asbestos, and occupational exposures to lung irritants.
What are the symptoms of lung cancer?
In the early stages, there may be no signs or symptoms of lung cancer. Symptoms typically develop when the disease is advanced.
The signs and symptoms may include:
- A nagging cough that doesn’t go away
- Coughing up blood
- Shortness of breath
- Headaches, among other symptoms
How do you diagnose lung cancer?
If your physician suspects lung cancer he/she will order a number of tests including:
- Imaging: an x-ray or CT scan of the chest can show abnormalities suspicious for lung cancer.
- Biopsy: if a lung nodule or mass is seen on imaging, the physician takes a sample of the abnormal cells to determine if it is cancer and what type.
