Is having a cough normal?

While an occasional cough is normal, a cough that persists may be a sign of a medical problem. The common causes include:

  • Common cold and other lung infections
  • Inhaling an irritant (such as smoke, dust, chemicals or a foreign body)
  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Bronchitis
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Postnasal drip

Other causes are acute or chronic sinus infection, chronic lung diseases, heart failure, laryngitis, lung cancer, medications, and blood clots in your lungs (pulmonary embolism).

A cough can be serious if it is associated with shortness of breath, low oxygen, or coughing up blood.
